Step 1: Figure out a shape and just do THE OUTLINE of the shape. For example, if you set your hand down on a desk and your trace the shape of your hand, don't go and create the lines in your knuckle or finger nails. JUST THE OUTLINE.
Step 2: Composition, what is your center of emphasis? How are you going to make one thing STAND OUT against the other shapes. Where are you going to place it to stand out? How are you going to balance it? Will it be formally balanced (fits the screen right smack dab in the middle) or will it be informally balanced (off to the side but is visually heavier).
Step 3: Figure out your line quality.. Playing with the stroke thickness and profile shape if you want.
Step 4: Create 4 PATTERNS ( you'll turn in your 4 patterns on its own document into teams ). You can use 1 of those 4 patterns throughout your shapes. However, if you'd like to use another one to help the CENTER OF EMPHASIS, you can. Make that pattern be the one that stands out against the crowd.
Step 5: Piece it all together, figure out color schemes. We want a nicely controlled color scheme but make it pop. You center of emphasis can be color as well. Just play with it.
Students will create a visually compelling composition in Adobe Illustrator by outlining a single shape, designing with intentional emphasis and balance, exploring line quality, developing original patterns, and applying controlled yet dynamic color schemes to unify their final design.
I will trace and outline a single shape to serve as the foundation of my composition, focusing on contour rather than detail.
I will plan my composition with a clear center of emphasis, making one shape or area stand out using size, placement, pattern, or color.
I will explore balance by deciding whether to create a formally (symmetrical) or informally (asymmetrical) balanced layout.
I will experiment with line quality, adjusting stroke thickness and profiles to add variation and interest.
I will design four original patterns, turning them in separately, and apply one or more to support my visual emphasis.
I will strategically use pattern to unify my design and make the focal point stand out from the surrounding elements.
I will apply a well-controlled color scheme, using contrast, harmony, and intensity to support the mood and emphasis in my design.
I will reflect on how composition, pattern, and color choices guide the viewer’s attention and communicate visual impact.
