Students will explore alternative approaches to portrait photography by creating faceless portraits that emphasize mood, identity, and storytelling through composition, body language, and artistic techniques, rather than facial expression.
I will experiment with composition and framing to create portraits that do not rely on facial features to convey meaning or emotion.
I will explore how gesture, environment, and lighting can be used to emphasize identity and emotion in a subject without showing their face.
I will analyze examples of faceless portraiture to understand how artists use visual elements to tell a story or evoke a mood.
I will plan and shoot my own faceless portraits, pushing creative boundaries and thinking differently about portraiture.
I will use Photoshop or Lightroom to edit and enhance my images, adjusting color, contrast, and tone to support the concept.
I will reflect on how removing the face from a portrait can shift the viewer’s focus and impact the interpretation of the image.
I will critique and discuss work with peers, using thoughtful language to evaluate composition, concept, and emotional impact.
