Follow along with the tutorial to apply texture in 3 different ways.
Let's go onto google image search and type in: Photographs of Sushi
Sketch 2 different sushi rolls from the following (you will have a total of 6 sketches on your page):
Top
Side
3/4 tilt
Consider the following: Shape, Line, and Texture
Build in illustrator the sketches from above on 3 different art boards.
One Artboard size 5x5 with the top view
One Artboard size 5x5 with the side view
One Artboard size 5x5 with the 3/4 tilt view
Consider the following: Shape, Line, Color, and Texture
Pay attention to how the sushi lays on the plate. Also how composition is working (Do we have a whole plate view? Is it zoomed into the sushi roll? is half the plate showing? Get creative)
Sketch 2 sketches of views, keep in mind what else goes on the plate -- Wasabi, Ginger, miso soup? What do you want on there.

Compositional Unity: Balance, Unity, Line, Shape, Texture, and Color
Choose one of your plated meal sketches and make that plated meal on an Artboard Size 10x10.
AGAIN PAY ATTENTION TO:
Balance, Unity, Line, Shape, Texture, and Color
What is on the plate? Wasabi? Ginger? Chopsticks? Miso soup? Etc,.

Students will design a stylized sushi plate scene in Adobe Illustrator by building custom shapes, applying texture techniques, and composing a visually appealing layout that demonstrates attention to form, detail, and overall presentation.
I will create original sushi-inspired shapes using Illustrator’s shape tools, Pen Tool, and Shape Builder Tool.
I will add texture to my artwork using techniques like gradients, brushes, pattern fills, and opacity masks to simulate surface details (e.g., rice, seaweed, fish).
I will study real food forms to simplify and stylize them into clean vector shapes while keeping them recognizable.
I will compose a plated food scene that feels balanced and complete, considering arrangement, scale, and negative space.
I will use layering and shadows to build a sense of depth and realism in my illustration.
I will choose a color palette that enhances the mood and visual appeal of the food and plating.
I will apply Illustrator skills with precision, maintaining clean edges, smart grouping, and organized layers.
2.1 Elements of Design
2.2 Principles of Design
2.4.1 Apply effective use of negative space, composition, message structure, graphics, etc., to graphic works
2.4.3 Create graphic works utilizing templates.
2.4.4 Utilize rule of thirds, simplicity, and/or complexity, etc. in layout.
3.1.1 Generate project ideas through the use of brainstorming, thumbnails, roughs, mockups, wireframes, etc.
3.2.4 Apply nondestructive image editing techniques such as layering and masking
3.2.5 Practice using different selection tools and techniques to manipulate images.
3.3.1 Use appropriate resolution, compression, and file formats for various media outputs including web, video, audio, and print.
3.4.1 Develop a workflow for a project.
10.1.2 Create 2D or 3D works of design in analog and digital formats.
